Promoting Patient Wellness Over Excessive Health Services

One of the biggest issues facing the health industry today is the fact that the industry is continuing to rely on developing health services that are too complex instead of involving the patients. To most patients, improving healthcare doesn’t equal more services, it equals better health.

The director of the Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics at the University of Pennsylvania and the Perelman School of Medicine recently stated that feedback loops will help providers to focus on improving the outcome of patient health instead of on service and policy details. For example, a feedback loop can alert a physician when a patient shows signs of abnormal blood pressure or blood sugar, thereby allowing clinicians to focus on patients that are at high risk without intervention.

He believes there should be more emphasis on behavioral health, something that providers typically believe is outside of their medical training and sphere of influence. However, improvements in medical technology, such as wearable and wireless devices that can monitor blood pressure, sleep patterns and more, can create new possibilities in terms of engaging patients and improving health.

The integration of behavioral science into the interactions between patients and doctors will allow consumers more choices concerning their healthcare plans, treatments and clinical pathways.
